Mineral absorption and bone health
A sufficient supply of calcium is important for lifelong bone health, but the calcium from our diet is only partially absorbed, depending on the food source. Scientific studies indicate that the prebiotic fermentation pattern of the chicory root fibres increases the absorption of calcium, through enhancement of the absorption capacity of the large intestine. Also, the lowered pH resulting from the bacterial production of organic acids was demonstrated to support the absorption of calcium. This enhanced absorption may be accompanied by better measures of bone turnover and improvement of bone mineral density, which is linked to stronger bones.
Scientific studies - Studies have shown that the intake of chicory root fibres results in a significant increase in calcium absorption. In addition, a one-year study showed an increase in calcium absorption and bone mineralization in adolescents. Bone mineralization is the standard biomarker for the support of bone health on the long term.
